The whole week went by and then it hit me that I had a doctor’s appointment the next day.

I knew I had to be ready when Michelle came to pick me up.

When I woke up the next morning, I got in the shower, got dressed, made some tea, and waited for Michelle. When she got here, she was surprised to see that I was ready to go. She came in, gave me a hug, and said, “How are you feeling?”

I said, “Still not well,” and we headed out the door.

On the drive to my appointment, I wanted to ask about Kim, but I didn’t want her to think this was why I was letting her take me to the doctor. When we arrived, I filled out all of the forms and handed them to the lady behind the counter along with my medical card. She told me to have a seat until I was called. Sounding somber, I said, “So Michelle, how have you been?”

She said, “I’ve been okay.”

“How are you and Vanessa doing?”

“Everything is great. I’m going to ask her to move in with me.”

“Wow, that’s big. So, I guess you love her?”

“I more than love her; I’m in love with her. I was trying to take it slow. After all, look what happened with Angie.”

I said, “Yeah, I can understand that. So when are you going to ask her?”

“Tomorrow night, I’m taking her to a special dinner because it’s our anniversary.”

“Congratulations. I wish you all the best and I hope it lasts a lifetime. You deserve it.”

She said, “Thank you, Carrie.”

I replied, “You’re very welcome. I have a favor to ask of you.”

She said, “Okay. What is it, Carrie?”

“Last week after you left, I wrote a letter to Kim. I was wondering if you could get it to her.”

“Look, Carrie, she’s doing a little better and I don’t want to upset her. So I don’t think that would be wise.”

“I’ll tell you what. Why don’t you read it and if you think it’s going to upset her then I won’t send it to her, okay?”

She said, “Okay, Carrie.”

I pulled the letter out of my purse. Michelle read it and agreed to give it to Kim but assured me she could not make her read it. I said, “Fair enough. Thanks, Michelle.”

Then she looked at me with a sad look and said, “Carrie, your mother tried to kill you?”

“I don’t really want to talk about it, please.”

She put her arm around me and said, “Okay.”

They called my name and I went in to see the doctor. They performed all kinds of tests, including that long overdue AIDS test. I sat there in that cold room with that gown on waiting for the doctor to come back. When he walked into the room, he had my chart in his hands. Looking down at it, he said, “You need to eat more. The reason you’re not feeling well is that you’re not eating enough for two.”

I said, “Excuse me?”

He repeated himself, makingit clearerthis time.
